Vehicles on the Hirtshals to Bergen ferry

What each type of vehicle costs, the height and length limits, and why the vehicle decks stay shut for 17 hrs 30 min.

Checked

The harbour at Hirtshals with the breakwater, fishing boats and cars on the quay

Fjord Line carries cars, motorhomes, caravans, motorcycles and bicycles on this route. The vehicle is charged on top of the per-person fare and priced on the dimensions it arrives with at check-in.

One rule shapes everything else here: the vehicle decks are sealed at sea, and on the Bergen sailing that is 17 hrs 30 min rather than 11. You do not sleep in the motorhome, and you do not go down for a forgotten bag halfway through the morning.

What 17 hrs 30 min changes for your vehicle

Most of what applies here also applies on the shorter routes. Three things are specific to Bergen:

  • Pack for a night and a morning. With the decks sealed for 17 hrs 30 min, whatever you leave in the car stays there until 13:00. That includes the cool box.
  • Fill up before you board. Fuel is cheaper in Denmark, and after you land the first Norwegian station is a Norwegian price. See onward from Bergen.
  • The toll ring starts at the gate. Bergen has an automatic toll ring, so registering with Epass24 before you travel is worth the five minutes.

With a motorhome or caravan

This route carries a lot of motorhomes, and with reason: the western fjords are a long way from any other arrival port, and the crossing removes both the driving and a night’s pitch.

  1. Measure length and height before booking

Fjord Line asks for the loaded dimensions: bike rack, roof box, awning and anything on the drawbar. Over 4.5 m or 6 m is quoted individually.

  2. Declare the caravan when you book

A caravan added to a car booking is charged at the rate applying at check-in. Declared in advance, the price is fixed.

  3. Book the berth at the same time

Cabins and vehicle spaces are separate inventories. Both sell out on busy sailings and you need one of each.

  4. Close the gas bottles

Gas bottles must be closed for the crossing. Check the current rule with Fjord Line; it is enforced during loading.

With a motorcycle

Motorcycles are the cheapest vehicle class on the route and are not affected by the height limits. They are loaded as a group and strapped down by the deck crew. On an overnight crossing you also book an Air Seat or a cabin, so count that into the total.

Bring waterproofs for the marshalling lanes: the vehicle deck is covered, the lanes in front of it are not.

Without a vehicle

Foot passengers are carried, and Bergen is the arrival port where that works best in the whole network. Jekteviksterminalen is about 15 min on foot from Bryggen, and the railway and bus stations are a similar walk. See Bergen port.

You reach Hirtshals without a car by train to Hjørring and then the Hirtshalsbanen branch to the port. See getting to Hirtshals.

Electric vehicles

Norway has one of the densest charging networks in Europe, so route planning on this trip needs more attention on the Danish and German legs than after you land. Charging on the vehicle deck is not possible during the crossing, and with 17 hrs 30 min at sea that is worth planning around: arrive with enough range to reach a charger after Bergen.

Pets

Fjord Line has pet-friendly cabins and a kennel on board. Numbers are limited, so add the animal when you book rather than at check-in. Norway’s import rules for animals apply independently of the booking and are stricter, so check both.

What to have ready before you book

Have the height, the length, the number of people and the berth clear, in that order. Prices explains what the fare depends on, and the cabins covers the berth.

Questions people ask

Can I stay in my motorhome during the crossing?

No. The vehicle decks are sealed once the ferry sails and reopen shortly before arrival. On this route that means sealed for about 17 hrs 30 min.

What are the size limits for a motorhome?

Fjord Line publishes 4.5 m height and 6 m length for the Hirtshals crossings, combination included. Anything larger is quoted individually, subject to space.

How are vehicles measured?

As they arrive at check-in, loaded. A roof box, a bike rack or a raised antenna counts, so round up and enter the real dimensions when booking.

Is a motorcycle cheaper?

Yes, it is the cheapest vehicle class on the route and is not affected by the height limits. You still book an Air Seat or a cabin on top.
