Onward from Bergen
Distances to the western fjords, what the toll ring costs a foreign car, and why road time here runs longer than the kilometres suggest.
Checked

From the gate at Jektevik you are already in the fjord region. Voss is about 100 km, the Hardangerfjord starts within 80 km, and Flåm is a morning’s drive. That is the whole point of staying on board past Stavanger.
Two costs apply on the Norwegian side. Tolls are charged automatically by number plate, with no barriers, and the ways of registering differ a lot in price. Fuel costs more than in Denmark, so it is usually cheaper to fill up in Hirtshals before boarding.
Distances from Bergen
| Destination | Distance | By car |
|---|---|---|
| Norheimsund, Hardangerfjord | approx. 80 km | approx. 1 hr 15 min |
| Voss | approx. 100 km | approx. 1 hr 30 min |
| Eidfjord, Vøringsfossen | approx. 150 km | approx. 2 hrs 30 min |
| Flåm, Aurlandsfjord | approx. 165 km | approx. 2 hrs 30 min |
| Odda, for Trolltunga | approx. 135 km | approx. 3 hrs 30 min via the Fv7 |
| Stavanger | approx. 210 km | approx. 5 hrs, two fjord ferries |
| Ålesund | approx. 420 km | A full driving day |
| Oslo | approx. 460 km | A full driving day |
Distances are approximate, for the shortest road route, checked in August 2026. Read the times rather than the kilometres: west Norwegian roads cross fjords by bridge, tunnel and ferry, and the average speed is well below what the distance suggests.
The Hardangerfjord
The closest of the big fjords, and the reason many people take this crossing.
| Nearest point | Norheimsund, approx. 80 km, around 1 hr 15 min |
| The scenic road | Fv7 along the northern shore, narrow in places |
| Hardanger Bridge | Carries the Rv13 across the fjord near Ulvik, tolled |
| Vøringsfossen | At Eidfjord, one of Norway’s highest waterfalls, with a viewing platform |
| Trolltunga | Trailhead at Skjeggedal near Odda, a full day’s walk of 10 to 12 hrs |
| Blossom season | Late April into May in the orchards along the fjord |
Arriving at 13:00 means you can be on the Hardangerfjord the same afternoon, which an evening arrival elsewhere does not allow.

Tolls for a foreign car
Norway charges tolls automatically by number plate, with no barriers to stop at. Bergen has a toll ring around the city, so you pass a point within minutes of the terminal.
| Option | How it works | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Do nothing | A bill is posted to the registered keeper | An extra plate lookup fee per passage, at the standard rate |
| Register with Epass24 | Add plate and payment card in advance, free | No lookup fee, and the correct rate for your emissions class |
| AutoPASS chip for visitors | Order in advance, fitted to the windscreen | Around 20 percent off per passage for ordinary cars, on top of the Epass24 benefit |
Two rules limit what a day adds up to:
- The hour rule. Within 60 minutes you pay once per toll ring, however many points you pass.
- The monthly cap. A vehicle pays no more than a set amount per toll ring in a calendar month.
Rates, discount levels and conditions are set by the Norwegian state and change. Check the current position before travelling rather than trusting a figure printed here.
Fuel
Fuel costs more in Norway than in Denmark. The practical consequence is simple:
- Fill up in Hirtshals before boarding on the way out
- Fill up in Denmark after landing on the way back, not in Norway before departure
The filling stations are on the approach road into Hirtshals rather than at the terminal itself.
Without a car
Bergen is the one Norwegian arrival port where a car is optional.
- The Bergen Line runs from the railway station to Oslo in around 7 hrs, one of the classic rail journeys in Europe, with Myrdal for the Flåm Railway on the way.
- Buses to Voss and the Hardangerfjord leave from the bus station next to the railway station.
- Express boats run north up the coast from Strandkaiterminalen, including the Sognefjord service.
All three are within a 20 min walk of the ferry terminal.
Somewhere to stay
A 13:00 arrival gives you a full afternoon, but a bed in the region is something you book ahead in summer.

Planning the return
The return sails at 14:00 from Jektevik and is in Hirtshals at 07:30. Two practical points: fuel is cheaper in Denmark, and the terminal opens at 11:30, so the morning in Bergen is yours as far as about 12:45. Check the timetable for your return date.
Book the return
Booking out and back at the same time is worth considering once the return date is fixed, because frequency varies with the season.
