Hirtshals port and check-in for Bergen
The terminal, the deadlines for an evening sailing, and how to fill the hours before boarding.
Checked

Hirtshals sits on the northern tip of Jutland and grew up around its harbour. Fjord Line sails from Nordsøterminalen, Containerkajen 4, 9850 Hirtshals, its own terminal within a port that also handles the short crossings to Kristiansand and Larvik.
An evening departure changes the shape of the day. On a sailing that leaves at 19:15 you are not chasing a morning deadline; you are filling an afternoon.
The terminal
The port has several terminals and a large fishing harbour, so follow the Fjord Line signs rather than the town name alone: Color Line sails from a different quay in the same port.
The E39 runs into Hirtshals and the harbour is signposted from the edge of town. There are no toll points on the Danish motorway network on this stretch.
Check-in, step by step
2 hrs before: check-in opens
The earliest you can join the marshalling lanes. In July and August, arriving close to that time is the safer choice.
60 min before: recommended arrival
Fjord Line's stated minimum, foot passengers included.
approx. 30 min before: loading closes
After that, Fjord Line's rebooking terms apply.
Cabin keys are issued on board
You collect them after loading, not at check-in, so a cabin is no reason to arrive earlier.
Bring a passport or national photo ID for everyone travelling. Norway sits outside the EU, so this is checked rather than assumed.

Fuel
Fuel is cheaper in Denmark than in Norway, so filling up before loading is worth the stop. The filling stations are on the approach road rather than at the terminal, so do it before you turn into the port.
On this route that matters more than on the short crossings: you land in Bergen with the fjords ahead of you, and Norwegian pump prices apply from the first station.
On the return the same applies in reverse; it is usually cheaper to fill up after landing in Hirtshals.
Parking
If you travel without the car on board, it stays in Hirtshals while you are away.
| At the terminal | Port parking at a daily rate, closest to the entrance |
| Hotel Skaga | Monitored long-stay parking, from around DKK 75 a day and DKK 300 a week |
| Free spaces in town | They exist, but are time-limited and not intended for a week |
| Payment | Card and MobilePay, cash not everywhere |
If you are leaving a car in Denmark for a week or more, agree the long-stay rate when you book rather than on arrival. Figures checked in August 2026.
By train to the terminal
Train to Hjørring on the main Jutland line, then the Hirtshalsbanen branch for the last 13 km. The journey takes about 22 min, runs roughly hourly and costs from around DKK 14. Get off at Lilleheden, the stop before Hirtshals station and the closest to Nordsøterminalen. Rejseplanen.dk covers both the train and the buses from Aalborg.
What to do in Hirtshals before boarding
An evening departure leaves most of the day free. Hirtshals is small, and an hour or two covers it.
Nordsøen Oceanarium is the main attraction: northern Europe’s largest aquarium, with a four million litre tank and a seal feeding in the middle of the day. Allow one to two hours, which suits families breaking a long drive.
Beyond that there is the lighthouse from 1863, within walking distance of the town centre, Bunkermuseum Hirtshals in the dunes with around 70 preserved Atlantic Wall structures, and the fishing harbour, where the auction runs in the morning.
The town centre is a 5 min drive and has supermarkets and a few places to eat. Buying food before loading is worth considering: there are restaurants on board, all paid separately, and the buffet is busiest straight after departure.
Somewhere to stay before departure
Most travellers reach Hirtshals the same day, because the ferry sails in the evening. Beyond about 6 hrs of driving, a night still splits the trip.
- Hirtshals itself. Walking distance from the terminal. The town is small and rooms are limited in summer.
- Aalborg, about 1 hr south. Considerably more choice of hotels and restaurants, and 58 km north the next day.
