The crossing in short
The ferry from Hirtshals in Denmark to Bergen in Norway takes about 17 hrs 30 min and is the only direct sea route from Denmark to Norway’s fjord capital. Fjord Line is the sole operator, sailing MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord. Departure is in the evening, usually around 19:15, and arrival is at 13:00 the next day. Fares start at €106 per person for an Air Seat and €183 for a cabin.
You dock at Jekteviksterminalen on Nøstegaten, on the southern edge of the centre. Bryggen, the fish market and the Fløibanen funicular are all within a walk of the ramp.
It is one sailing, not two
This is the single most useful thing to know before you book, and the aggregators rarely say it: Bergen is not a separate service. It is the same departure as the Stavanger crossing, on the same ferry. At 07:00 it ties up at Risavika, passengers for Rogaland drive off, and the crossing carries on north for another six hours.
That changes how you should compare it. The question is not “17 hrs 30 min against 11 hrs”. The question is what you do with the six hours between Stavanger and Bergen: spend them at the rail, or spend them on the E39 with two fjord ferries in the way.

What happens after Stavanger
Both columns start on the same ship, at the same quay, at 07:00. One of them stays on it.

The differenceBoth reach Bergen at about the same time. One of them costs you five hours at the wheel, two ferry queues and roughly NOK 340 before tolls. The other costs you nothing you were not already paying for.
Is Bergen the right arrival port for you?
Bergen suits the western fjords, Hardanger, Sogn og Fjordane and Bergen itself. From Jektevik you are already in the region; no other crossing from Hirtshals puts you there without a long drive.
Six services run from Hirtshals to four Norwegian ports. For Oslo and eastern Norway this is the wrong one, since Bergen to Oslo is around 460 km on roads that average well below motorway speed. For Rogaland and Preikestolen you want the same ship but a different exit: get off at Risavika and you are 12 km from Stavanger.
The route comparison sets out crossing times, frequency and the onward drive for all six.

What this crossing is not
Worth saying plainly, because the pages that sell tickets rarely do.
- It is not a short hop. Kristiansand is 2 hrs 25 min by catamaran. This is a night and most of a day.
- It is not the route for Oslo. Bergen to Oslo is around 460 km. Larvik lands you 135 km away.
- It is not the cheapest way across. The headline fare includes a berth. Whether the total is higher depends on whether you would have paid for a hotel and a driving day anyway.
- You do not sleep in the motorhome. The vehicle decks are sealed at sea, and on this route that means sealed for 17 hrs 30 min.

Compare dates and berths
The fare depends on the date and the berth you book. Putting a few dates side by side is usually what brings the price down.
